Nirvana Treks & ToursUpdated 19 June 20268 min read

Short answer

Yes, if you want a real adventure hit: a tandem flight off one of the world's top sites, plus gentle treks and Tibetan culture in one easy trip. Skip it if you only care about hardcore, long-distance trekking. Bir's walks are mellow.

What you actually do here

Fly. The takeoff is at Billing, around 2,400 m, and you land down at Bir. A tandem flight runs roughly 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions, with a pilot doing all the work. On a good day you are looking across the whole Kangra valley with the Dhauladhar at your back.

Walk. The trekking is gentle and scenic: the Bir to Billing trail, the quiet Rajgundha valley, short forest and waterfall walks. Good for legs that want movement, not a beating.

Slow down. Bir is a Tibetan settlement, so there are monasteries, prayer flags, and a proper little cafe scene. It is one of the few adventure spots where the rest day is as good as the activity.

Worth it for

  • A first flying experience, no skill needed
  • People who want adventure without a brutal climb
  • Anyone who likes culture and cafes alongside the outdoors
  • Short trips, it is easy to reach and easy to enjoy

Maybe skip if

  • You came purely for a long, hard trek
  • You are travelling in monsoon, when flights stop
  • You want total solitude, Bir is lively
  • You are on a very tight budget and the flight is the whole point

What it costs

Three separate buckets, so budget them separately. The tandem flight is a per-person fee that moves with season and demand, highest in the peak autumn window. Stay and food in Bir is affordable, from hostels to nicer cafes. Transport is the overnight bus from Delhi. Add an optional video of your flight if you want the footage.

Book flights through verified pilots. Use licensed operators with proper gear and insurance, and check the weather window. For official advisories, see Himachal Pradesh Tourism. We arrange vetted pilots as part of our trip.

Best time to go

  • October to November: the prime flying season. Stable air, clear views, the busiest and best window.
  • March to May: the second season. Good flying with greener hills.
  • July to mid-September: monsoon. No paragliding. Skip for flying.

How to reach Bir Billing from Delhi

Bir sits in the Kangra valley, roughly 500 km from Delhi. The easiest route is an overnight bus towards Baijnath or Dharamshala, then a short local taxi to Bir, around 12 to 14 hours door to door. Drivers usually take the Chandigarh and Bilaspur road, the same corridor most Himachal trips use.

  • Bus: overnight Volvo from Delhi towards Baijnath, then a 30 to 40 minute taxi to Bir. The cheapest and most common option.
  • Train plus road: rail to Pathankot, then the scenic narrow-gauge Kangra valley railway or a cab onward to Bir.
  • Air: the nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), about two hours away, with limited flights from Delhi.

A typical weekend at Bir

1

Saturday morning, arrive and settle

Reach Bir off the overnight bus, check in, and ease into the day with a café breakfast. Most flights run when the air is most stable, so the pilots watch the window.

2

The tandem flight

Drive up to the Billing take-off at around 2,400 m, gear up with your pilot, and launch when conditions are right. The glide down to the Bir landing field takes 15 to 30 minutes over the whole Kangra valley.

3

Afternoon, monasteries and cafés

Wander the Tibetan colony, the Chokling and Sherabling monasteries, prayer flags and the famous café trail. This is the slow half of Bir, and it is part of the appeal.

4

Sunday, a gentle walk before the bus

Stretch the legs on the easy Bir to Billing trail or a short forest and waterfall walk, then board the evening bus back to Delhi.

What to carry

  • Layers. It is cool at the Billing take-off even when Bir is warm, so carry a light fleece or windcheater for the flight.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen. You are exposed at altitude in open air.
  • Closed shoes. Trainers or trail shoes for the take-off slope and the gentle walks.
  • A secured camera or phone strap. Most pilots also offer a GoPro video of your flight for an add-on fee.
  • Light cash. Handy for cafés, monastery donations and the local taxi.
One trip, three experiences. Bir Billing is the rare weekend where you fly, walk and soak up culture without rushing any of them. Build in a buffer afternoon so a weather delay on the flight does not derail the whole plan.
