How to Reach Kasol From Delhi: Bus, Cab and the Smart Overnight Route

Nirvana Treks & ToursUpdated 17 June 20268 min read
The Parvati Valley near Kasol in Himachal Pradesh, with pine forest and snow peaks

520 km, one valley, and the river that meets you somewhere past Bhuntar.

Kasol sits in the Parvati Valley, about 520 km from Delhi, and getting there is simpler than the distance suggests. The catch is that no train pulls into Kasol and flights are unreliable, so almost everyone arrives by road. Here is how to reach Kasol from Delhi by every route worth taking, plus the overnight trick that saves you a full day.

Kasol is the launch pad for some of Himachal's best trails, from Kheerganga to Tosh and Malana. If a trek is the reason you are heading up, this guide gets you to the trailhead with a day to spare. For a wider list, see our roundup of the best weekend treks from Delhi. You can also read up on the village itself on Kasol's Wikipedia page.

Delhi to Kasol: distance and travel time

Kasol is roughly 520 km from Delhi, and the drive takes 12 to 14 hours depending on traffic, road work and how many tea stops you make. The route runs north on NH44 to Chandigarh, then up through Bilaspur, Sundernagar and Mandi to Bhuntar, and finally along the Parvati Valley road into Kasol.

Because it is a long single haul, the smart move is to do it overnight. You sleep through the boring highway hours and wake up to the mountains. We will come back to that route at the end.

By bus: the popular way to reach Kasol

Best for budget travellers and solo trips

Overnight bus from Delhi

Time12–14 hrs
Boards atKashmiri Gate
CostBudget friendly

Buses leave from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and from Majnu ka Tila, with both government services and private Volvo operators running through the season. You can book government buses on the official HRTC online portal, or compare private operators on redBus. A handful of operators run a direct Delhi to Kasol overnight Volvo. The rest take you toward Manali, and you get off partway at Bhuntar.

Heads up. Bus fares and timings change with season and demand, so check live schedules on the HRTC portal or a booking app before you travel. We have kept the costs here as broad bands rather than exact numbers for that reason.

The Bhuntar connection

If your bus is not a direct Kasol service, this is the part to understand. Bhuntar is the small town where the Parvati Valley branches off the main Kullu to Manali highway. Almost every Manali bound bus passes through it.

  1. Stay on the bus until Bhuntar, which you reach early in the morning.
  2. From the Bhuntar stand, take a local HRTC bus or a shared cab heading up the Parvati Valley.
  3. Kasol is about 30 km and one hour further along the river, past Jari.

It sounds like a hassle on paper. In practice it is a quick, scenic ride along the Parvati river and the easiest way to reach Kasol if a direct bus is sold out.

By cab or self-drive

Best for groups and door to door comfort

Private cab or your own car

Time~12 hrs
Routevia Chandigarh, Mandi
CostSplit across the car

A private cab or self-drive makes sense for a group of four or more, where the cost splits and you get door to door comfort with stops on your terms. Follow NH44 to Chandigarh, then the Mandi route to Bhuntar, then the Parvati Valley road. If you are driving yourself, the valley road past Bhuntar is narrow and winding, so do that final stretch in daylight if you can.

By air

The nearest airport is Bhuntar, also called Kullu Manali airport, about 30 km from Kasol. Flights are limited, run on small aircraft, and get cancelled often in poor weather, so do not build a tight plan around them. The more reliable option is to fly into Chandigarh, roughly 280 km away, and continue by cab or bus from there. The state tourism board's Himachal Tourism site lists current air connectivity if you want to check before booking.

By train

There is no direct train to Kasol. The nearest broad gauge railheads are Chandigarh at around 290 km and Kiratpur. From either, you complete the journey by road. The scenic Kangra narrow gauge line does not serve the Parvati Valley, so trains only help you cover the first leg out of Delhi.

The smart overnight route

Here is the version we recommend to every weekend traveller, because it turns a two day journey into an overnight one and saves you a hotel night:

  • Friday, 5 to 9 PM: board an overnight Volvo from Kashmiri Gate or Majnu ka Tila.
  • Saturday, 6 to 8 AM: reach Bhuntar, fresh off a night of sleep.
  • Saturday, ~9 AM: connect to Kasol and you are at the trailhead with a full day ahead.

Do the same in reverse on the way back: descend on Sunday, take the night bus out, and you are home by Monday morning. It is exactly how our Kheerganga weekend trips are timed. For the full picture of what fits a two day window, see our guide to the best weekend treks from Delhi.

Best time to reach Kasol

Plan your trip around the road as much as the weather. March to June and September to November are the best windows, with clear skies and open trails. Avoid peak monsoon in July and August, when the Parvati Valley road is prone to landslides and delays. Winter is quiet and beautiful but cold, with snow possible higher up the valley.
