Best time to trek in Himachal Pradesh, month by month
The short version
Himachal has two prime trekking windows: April to June before the monsoon, and late September to early November after it. July and August are monsoon, skip the popular valleys. December to February is for snow treks only.
The year at a glance
Tap any month to see what is trekkable and where to go.
Spring: March to May
March is the thaw. Snow pulls back from lower and mid-altitude trails, rhododendrons start to bloom, and easier routes like Triund reopen. Higher trails still hold snow, so keep your ambitions mid-range.
April is one of the best months of the year. The weather is settled and pleasant, the valleys are green, and most mid-altitude treks are open: Triund, Kareri Lake, lower Churdhar, and paragliding season at Bir Billing.
May brings peak season. Almost everything is open, including higher treks like Kheerganga. It is busy, especially on weekends, so book ahead. This is also when people start escaping the plains heat.
Summer: June
June is prime time for the high treks. The snow has cleared from passes and high lakes, days are long, and the pre-monsoon air is usually clear. This is the window for Kheerganga, Yulla Kanda and other altitude routes. Go in June rather than risk the rain that follows.
Monsoon: July to mid-September
July and August are the monsoon. In the popular valleys, the Dhauladhar around Triund and Kareri, and the Parvati Valley around Kheerganga, this means slippery trails, leeches, clouded views, and a real risk of landslides and road blocks. We do not run treks there in peak monsoon, and you should not either.
The exception is the rain-shadow north. Spiti, Lahaul and upper Kinnaur sit behind the main range and stay dry, which makes monsoon their best season. If you want to trek in July or August, that is where you go. Read the full breakdown in our monsoon trekking guide.
Autumn: mid-September to November
September starts wet and ends beautifully. By the second half of the month the monsoon withdraws and the air turns sharp and clear. Late September is excellent for Kheerganga and Kareri Lake.
October is, for most treks, the best month of the year. Stable weather, the clearest views you will get, and comfortable temperatures. Everything is good, from Triund to Churdhar to Yulla Kanda.
November is crisp and quiet early on, a lovely time for Triund and Kareri before the cold sets in. High passes start closing with the first snow, so stay mid-altitude later in the month.
Winter: December to February
Winter is not for regular trekking, it is for snow treks. From December through February, specific routes deliver reliable snow, a winter Triund, Prashar Lake, and a few others, while high-altitude treks are firmly closed. You need winter gear, shorter-day planning and ideally a guide. Our snow treks guide covers exactly where the snow is reliable.

What is the best month to trek in Himachal Pradesh?
For most treks, October is the single best month, with the clearest skies and most stable weather of the year. May and June are the other prime window before the monsoon. April and late September are also excellent.
When should you avoid trekking in Himachal?
July and August, the peak monsoon, for the popular valleys like Parvati and the Dhauladhar. Landslides, slippery trails and clouded views make it risky. The exception is the rain-shadow north, like Spiti, which stays dry.
Can you trek in Himachal in winter?
Yes, but only specific snow treks. From December to February, routes like a winter Triund and Prashar Lake offer reliable snow, while high-altitude treks are closed. Proper gear and a guide are essential.
Which months are best for high-altitude treks?
June, then late September and October. The snow has cleared from high passes and lakes by June, and after the monsoon the air is at its clearest. Most high treks close from November as snow returns.
